Cole Porter’s Tragedy at the Piping Rock Club
For many musicians, when we think of the Piping Rock Club, we can’t help but remember the tragic accident of the beloved composer and lyricist of some of America’s classic loves songs and Broadway hits, the musical genius Cole Porter.
In 1937, when Porter was forty-six, he went horseback riding along the club’s bridle path. Tragically, the horse slipped and fell crushing Porter’s legs. He laid there in pain, but by his account, worked out the lyric to his classic song “At Long Last Love.” Porter suffered the rest of his life from these injuries.
“At Long Last Love”
Is it an earthquake or simply a shock?
Is it the good turtle soup or merely the mock?
Is it a cocktail, this feeling of joy?
Or is what I feel the real McCoy?
Is it for all time or simply a lark?
Is it Granada I see or only Asbury Park?
Is it a fancy not worth thinking of?
Or is it at long last love?
“At Long Last Love” was incorporated into Cole Porter’s 1938 Broadway Musical You Never Know.
