Writing the Mitzvah Candle Lighting script or poem may seem like a daunting task at first. However, with first outlining the order and then describing a memorable experience with each person, it all should flow well. Rhyming is optional but as you can tell from the outline below, certain words just fall into place when rhyming with the numbered candle. The matching song should be the fun part. Below are some helpful poem writing ideas that may be used as a template.
Sample Candle Lighting Script or Poem with Songs
1. Memory Candle
I light this candle for those who are dear to me and are no longer
physically here. I miss you all but am sure that you are listening in and
celebrating together in heaven. This is for Grandma, Grandpa, Pop,
Uncle Al and Aunt Blanche.
Song: I Will Remember You by Sarah McLaughlin
2. Grammy + Poppy + Aunt Myra
You knew me and loved me before I could walk. Now you take the time to
always listen to me when I talk… and talk. I love to listen to your stories
and can hang out for hours with you!
I call up Grammy, Poppy and Aunt
Myra, to light candle number 2.
Song: I’ll Be There by Mariah Carey
3. Aunt Janet + Uncle Sy
Days are always filled with fun, whether in a frozen climate or a molten
sun. I love my Aunts who give me chances to tube down the mountain
and swim in the sea.
Aunt Janet & Uncle Sy, please join me to light
candle number 3.
Song: Dancing Queen by ABBA
4. Uncle Steve + Uncle Jake
Times together are spent in smiles and the fun times stretch for miles. I’ve
learned that ice cream is always in style and love our walking adventures.
I call up Uncle Jake and Uncle Steven…people i could always believe in.
Song: The Boys Are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy
5. Donny, Carrie, Ellie, lan
We can always find something to do, discover things we never knew. I
love our family visits together too, even though my mom always goes
“achoo”. I call up Donny, Carrie, Ellie, Ian, to light this candle anew.
Song: Stand by You by Rachel Platten
6. Matty, Sandra, Clairese
Hanging out with you is always a pleasure, watching the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Balloons are moments I will treasure forever. Thanksgiving
weekend is always better when you are thrown in the mix!
I call up Matty, Sandra, and Clairese to light candle number 6.
Song: Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
7. Cohen and Schwartz Cousins
My family is large and always like to schmooze. I am lucky to be able to
see a group of cousins together on years when we cruise. Although, part
of the crew is not here due to babies and in college, for those who are
here: Rachel, Michael, David, Ben and Wyatt it would be
heaven if you can light candle 7.
Song: Sea Cruise by Frankie Ford
8. Carly, Michael & Uncle Ted
a. Song: Feelin’ Good by Christina Grimmie
b. Family is defined by love and there are people in my life that are more
than friends they are my fruzins. They don’t love the spotlight and while I
tempt fate, I invite Carly, Michael and Uncle Ted to light candle 8.
9. Olivia, Michelle, Lizzy, and Carli
a. Song: Count on Me by Bruno Mars
b. When in a school or at lunch in Tenafly, these teachers are the best. They
make my school days filled with joy ..but maybe not when they give DBQs
and tests. Some say teachers can be unkind but to me, they are so much
more than fine! Olivia, MIchelle, Lizzy and Carli please come up to
light candle number 9.
10. The Kleinmans & Cohens
Your phone numbers are posted as my emergency contacts in case the
school needs to call. I love our road trips together each fall and our
outings to NYC landmarks and more. Even though my brother is sad as
we are light on men I call Eddie, Gabby, John, Michelle, Lauren and Olivia
to light candle number 10.
Song: A Little Help From My Friends by the Beatles
11. My friends
High school tours are ahead now that I finished grade 7. Where we will go,
my friends and I do not know. Musical theater, soccer, cooking, school
and art are places friends meet and we all have played a lot. Each person
is different and yet close to my heart so before I have to add more rhymes
than anyone can handle I invite all of my friends to light the next candle.
Song: Gone, Gone, Gone by Phillip Phillips
12. Alli and Samtha
Alli & Samantha, I have watched you grow and love our time together. I will
always be there no matter the weather. You know our love is unbelievably
strong…it makes you sure you know where you belong. Even if on your
toughest days, I will be there to help you handle, as I know you can help
me …come light this candle.
Song: Lean On Me – Glee Version
13. Mommy & Daddy
You are more than parents, you are also my friends. There is always a
pushover parent but you alternate which one is tough and who bends. I
love you no matter what you do, and your differences are what makes me
just like both of you. At least in my eyes, Daddy’s the king and Mamma’s
the queen so I call up my parents to light candle thirteen.
Song: You’ll Be In My Heart by Phil Collins
14. Me (Good Luck Candle)- No music for the last candle
My Torah study and rhymes are done and yet there is still one. I am
officially a Jewish adult but still a teen. So for luck and the future, and to
finish this scene, I thank you all for coming as I light candle 14.
