One of New York’ s premier rooftop wedding venues is the fantastic Press Lounge atop The Ink 48 Hotel. Our Star Talent Brazilian Music Ensemble provided a chic Bossa Nova atmosphere for a beautiful wedding reception out on the rooftop this weekend.
Singing Brazilian Music authentically requires an understanding of the lyricist and poet Vinicius de Moraes. Born in Rio de Jenairo, he was an established poet long before he met up with Carlos Antonio Jobim. He wrote sonnets which are some of the most extraordinary pieces in the Portuguese language. His most famous song, Garota de Ipanema, or Girl from Ipanema is a classic known around the world.
Something you notice in all of Vinicius’s lyrics – they’re based on the way Brazilian Portuguese is spoken, which has a natural rhythmic syncopation. If you try and sing these songs with a big full voice, they sound kitsch. They are not the kind of bold samba songs you get at a Brazilian carnival. The trick is to sing bossa nova as if you are speaking, like João Gilberto did. That way it sounds intimate, informal and conversational.
